Future president of the United States.
One would not expect Leslie Knope and Effie Trinket to have originated in 1970s New York's punk scene, but Emma MacAndie most certainly did. She was born in an artist's co-op in SoHo, long before gentrification swept the city clean of people like them. She likes to joke that she has three parents - her father, Dale, thought he was gay. After experimenting with his lifelong best friend, he knew he was. To the joy and delight of Bev MacAndie and her partner, Carla, little Emma was the result of this experiment. Adoption was out of the question for a polyamorous, sexually fluid pair of gutter punks who lacked both a permanent address and a traceable source of income. Society had told them their kind wasn't meant for family life, but they'd never lived their lives in accordance with society in the first place. Raising this child to become a happy, healthy, and wildly successful woman was perhaps their most defiant act of sticking it to the man.

Emma was an excellent student with the grades to show for it. Though she had always wanted to go to Yale (much to the chagrin of her parents), money was tight, and staying in the city for school was her most viable option. In '94, she graduated from Hunter College with a degree in Political Science and U.S. History. The job market wasn't kind to arts degrees even back then, so after she threw her cap in the air, Emma went right back to being the aimless odd jobber and occasional gallery assistant that she had been before. Despite this, choosing New York over New Haven was the best professional decision she'd ever made.

After a few months of aimlessly bumming around, Emma was approached by a pair of filmmakers on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Though skeptical (she had never acted in her life, they wanted her to play a high school student even though she was past college age, and she didn't see her "style" as anything special, simply what she had access to and could afford), she reluctantly agreed to take the part. The script was compelling, it paid a lot better than she was used to, and hey, she had always looked young for her age. The filmmakers were Larry Clark and Harmony Korine; the script was Kids. Emma's portrayal of Jennie, a sixteen-year-old girl who contracted HIV, made waves. Sudddenly, Emma MacAndie was everywhere. She was touted as a "Cool Girl"; the very face of Manhattan's youth culture.

And she couldn't handle it. Though she had loved acting, she was not quite so fond of being known primarily for her rainbow hair and "fascinating" (according to the Styles section) background when she knew she had so much more going on. She was funny, smart, and full of life, and interviewers weren't interested in any of these things so much as how she did her hair or where she got her dress. The city had stopped feeling like home once she was no longer another face in the crowd. And so on New Years', 1997, she spontaneously booked it to Chicago, where she and a college friend would live a slower life together for a while.

Emma couldn't deny her itch to perform, although she wanted to do something different this time. She just wasn't quite sure what that was. Through her roommate, she met MacKenna Leigh, an up-and-coming comedian who would change everything. MacKenna introduced her to the world of improv through the Upright Citizen's Brigade, where she finally felt as though she had found her people. Over the years, she became a lead cast member, and two years later, the pair was headlining the UCB TV show. Mack moved on as bigger things called her, but Emma hung back, becoming a major player in Chicago's improv scene. Eventually, though, she knew her time was up. The show ended, and Mack came to her with news of an opening on Saturday Night Live, an opportunity for which she got on the first plane to JFK.

Emma returned to her hometown a changed person. This time, she had scrubbed away all traces of her erstwhile peacock-like appearance, and she was determined to be taken seriously as a woman in the entertainment industry. With the support of an incredible team at SNL, she was given the freedom to talk about what mattered to her every Saturday night. Her killer wit and incisive political commentary transformed her from an It Girl to a bona fide star, and this distinction brings her great pride.

Though people who knew her before are crying "sellout," Emma is confident she is anything but. She has used her influence to champion the importance of women's issues and representations of strong women in the media. Supporting up-and-coming talent is a priority for her, both behind the scenes (Broad City) and in front of the camera (Parks and Recreation). She knows how silly it is that the former punk club kid is now most famous for portraying an eternally chipper government employee and the world's vainest and most misguided mentor ... and she loves that. Emma MacAndie is pretty silly herself.
